Maple Syrup

After the Whitecaps signed Canadian Internationals Marcel de Jong and David Edgar on free transfers, I mentioned on Twitter that 2 other talented Canadians were also available on frees this window.

Junior Hoilett is obviously a bit of a pipe dream, given he still has suitors in very good leagues in Europe, but Lucas Cavallini would appear to be right in the Caps wheelhouse. It then comes as little surprise that Uruguayan publication Salimo has linked Cavallini to the Caps.

Under Carl Robinson, the Caps have been extremely active in the Uruguayan market. Caps players like Sebastian Fernandez, Nicolas Mezquida, Octavio Rivero, Diego Rodriguez, and Cristian Techera, have all honed their skills in the Uruguayan Primรฉra. So when a Canadian becomes available within that same market, it’s only natural to connect those dots.

Whether there’s anything to this latest rumour or not, Cavallini is a player that the Caps should be looking at. At just 23 year’s old, Cavallini has already played 7,088′ of top flight football and has scored 33 goals and 7 assists – giving him a G/A per minute of 177′ (which means he’s directly involved in a goal every 2 full games he plays). Add in that he’d be a Canadian Domestic in MLS, at a position where the Caps are currently thin, and the argument becomes absurdly compelling.

If all that wasn’t enough, the Caps have a connection with the Cavallini family, having brought in Lucas’ younger brother Cristian for a USL trial in 2015.

What do you think? Should the Caps target Cavallini? Leave a comment and let us know.

  1. He and Hurtado are pretty similar in build. That would be interesting. With Barnes coming in they could play a 4-4-1-1 with 2 strikers and subbing Erik & Lucas would be interchangeable and kind of scary for the other team.

  2. Absolutely the Whitecaps should try to sign him! Wouldn’t require DP money either which would still leave a DP spot open for Robbo to fill in the winter.
